What is remedial massage therapy?
Remedial Massage involves rubbing and putting pressure on muscles, connective tissues, tendons and ligaments. When massage is used to improve someone's health, it is known as massage therapy.
Massage therapy can reduce stress and anxiety, help with pain, relax the muscles and rehabilitate injuries. For many healthy people with no chronic conditions, massage is simply enjoyable. For sports injurys and painful soft tissue injuries, remedial massage provides relief through movement, stretching and deep tissue massage techniques. As part of a remedial massage, you may be asked to do certain exercises following your appointment, in order to maintain or increase the effectiveness of the the therapy you have received.
Many people find certain types of massage calming and relaxing and generally it is known to reduce levels of cortisol (a stress inducing hormone), while increasing other hormones that have a positive effect on well being (including dopamine and serotonin). It is also known that massage therapy can increase the white blood cells within the circulatory system, thereby boosting the immune system.
Massage can also be used to treat problems with muscles, tendons and ligaments and can be used to address other health problems including
back pain
neck or shoulder pain
headaches
osteoarthritis
depression and anxiety
digestive disorders
whiplash injuries
sciatic pain
strains or soft tissue injuries
sports injuries
golfer's or tennis elbow
plantar fasciitis
arthritis
addiction
postural pain
rehabilitation from broken limbs
I provide the following massage therapies:
Remedial/Sports massage: This is used to treat damaged or painful muscles, tendons, ligaments or connective tissues, increase flexibility and range of motion and can be used after an injury or strain.. Massage aids the body's healing and helps to restore function. Where required, I also use hot stones and/or mechanical or cold stone massage, manual manipulation or muscle energy techniques as an assistance to remedial therapy. Also, for the purposes of rehabilitation, I am able to provide exercises that can be accessed online to aid with recovery from injury.
Deep tissue: Slow strokes are used to put pressure on muscles or tendons deep under the skin. This helps with specific trouble spots such as muscle injuries or back sprains and is used in conjunction with remedial/sports massage.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): This is an advanced therapy which uses a range of specialised and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to help stimulate your lymphatic system. It is a very light, rhythmic massage technique that encourages lymph (the fluid that bathes the cells) to flow more freely around your body. This massage stimulates your lymphatic system and helps increase the elimination of toxins and bacteria leaving you feeling less sluggish with a great sense of well-being. MLD is also deeply relaxing to the sympathetic nervous system and can be very helpful when used to relieve anxiety and stress disorders. MLD is beneficial for everyone! It is believed to help with a number of conditions – such as swollen ankles in pregnancy, varicose veins, sinusitis, puffy eyes, acne, fibromyalgia and more – and disorders. It is considered an MOT for the body and a great bi-yearly boost to your immune system.
